Be Prepared
The Scouting, Motto.
I always carry extra water, a day pack, and a sleeping bag in my vehicle. In the winter I always carry extra warm clothes in case I get stuck somewhere. I always carry raingear; you can get pretty cold when you get wet, even in the summer. You may never need it, but there is a sense of security that comes with being prepared.
It is important to carry things you will need and use. No two people will pack exactly the same things. As long as you have food, water, shelter and first aid covered you should be ok.
I have only had to use these things maybe two or three times in my life, but I was sure glad I had them. I have dug into my day pack for a snack when working because I didn’t want to take the time to eat lunch.
I have used the water; I carry a 2.5 gallon carrier, to help someone fill their radiator enough to get them to a gas station. I have used the water to fill someone’s windshield washer.
I have been traveling and just wanted to sleep outdoors rather than rent a motel room. To me these were non-emergencies.
I would much rather have a choice rather than be forced to make hard choices because I was unprepared. You make better decisions when you know you could survive for a couple of days. I do my best not to take unnecessary risks; accidents happen when you are not paying attention or doing something stupid.
The last item, an important one, is I always replace what I have used right away. Whether it is replacing the snack I ate or refilling the water container. It only takes a few minutes and you always have what you might need.
Have fun,
Ray
